The 2008 Convenience Report
This, the seventh Nielsen Convenience Report, provides a solid
overview of what’s happening in the industry at product and
department level as well as some valuable commentary. The data
comes from Nielsen C*Track, which is gathered from scan data at
the 2000-odd stores listed in the Report. Although these are the
large branded stores, they provide the industry’s most accurate
guide as to sales patterns through its 20,000 retail stores. |

The 2008 Nielsen Grocery Report
Following several years of economic growth, the Australian economy has certainly taken a stumble in 2008 off the back of the global economic meltdown. Our GDP growth is in decline, housing prices are still slipping, job vacancies are beginning to slow and the Australian share market is now
trading below 4000 points, while inflation is tracking at record highs – much of which can be attributed to increasing food prices. |

Global Consumer Confidence, Concerns and Spending - A global Nielsen consumer report (1st half, 2009)
Global consumer confidence has plummeted to a record new
low in the past six months, falling seven Index points from 84
to 77 according to the latest twice-yearly Nielsen Global
Consumer Confidence Index which tracks consumer confidence,
major concerns and spending habits among 25,140 internet
users in 50 countries. 48 of 49* markets surveyed by Nielsen between 19 March to
2 April 2009 experienced a drop in consumer confidence, with
48 of the 50 countries falling below an Index of 100 for the
first time. Indonesia and Denmark were the only markets to
remain above 100, with indices of 104 and 102 respectively. |

Retail and ShopperTrends, Asia Pacific 2008
While 2007 saw good growth in grocery retail sales in Asia
Pacific on the back of continued strong GDP numbers and rising
prices, the signs indicate that the next 12 months may pose a
much tougher challenge. Asian consumers highlighted the economy and job security
as two of their biggest concerns, with inflation cited by
many as their biggest economic concern in 2008. |
